The South Beach Diet
- The South Beach Diet originated in Miami Florida and was developed by cardiologist Dr. Arthur Agatston. The main idea of the diet is that bad carbohydrates prohibit the bodies ability to properly process fat or sugar. The diet includes the consumption of good fats and good carbohydrates. This diet has been described by many as a healthier version of the Atkins.
The diet includes three phases. In phase one all carbohydrates are stopped. Eliminated are things like potatoes, fruit, bread, cereal, rice, pasta, beets, carrots, and corn during the first two weeks. Three normal size meals everyday and two snakes are allowed. This will allow fat to be burned as energy.
In the second phase some carbohydrates are added back into the diet. This phase is maintained until the weight goal is achieved. The third phase is a maintenance phase which is a long term eating plan.
